In which the Meridian plays the Good Son

This blog will most likely be "dark" for the next week.

My mother, who lives in Austin, will be having back surgery (fairly routine, we're told) on Monday, and so Scruffy and I will drive down tomorrow to be there for the operation and her first few days back home. We'll be coming back next week.

Actual instruction from her doctor: while she's convalescing, she is not to pick up "anything heavier than a six-pack." That's where I come in.

At any rate, she has internet access in Austin, but it seems to me a bit unseemly for me to tell her to stop ringing her bell to get my attention because she's interrupting my blogging. So, I'll take some school work and some books along with me.

I'll be back "here" next weekend.

Sorry I missed you before you went, but will be hoping for the best of all possible outcomes with your mom's ("fairly routine") back surgery. From the description of the doctors limitations for her, I assume a six-pack IS ok. She may be needing it, too. Or stronger...

I hope all is well with your family.

Thank you for the kind wishes.
The surgery went well on Monday. The surgeon said that he was able to fuse two vertebrae together "good and tight" and was also able to clean out the stenitis (material similar to bone spurs) that had been rubbing against the nerves in her spinal column. Today, without even the aid of a walker or crutch, much less that of her Good Son, she was able to stand and sit, and she has already strolled a couple of times down the hallway where her hospital room is. She is sore but doesn't seem to be experiencing much pain, if any. Indeed, she seems to be in less pain now than she had been in before the surgery. She should leave the hospital sometime tomorrow (Wednesday).

She says she already feels as though she has her life back. That's easily the most optimistic thing she's said about her physical condition in years.

I am glad your mother is feeling better!

On a completely different note, I was subbing in a special ed class today and I had to ask them what the capital of Texas was. No one knew, including myself, until we looked it up on the big school pull-down map of the United States. Sad, eh?

I'm glad your Mum is better. Bone surgery is not fun, but it sounds like she's a scrapper.

I think Austin's the capital. Is it Austin?

Cheers.

"Mom! Not now! I'm blogging!" Yeah, lacks that sort of compassionate twinge that mothers seem to like.
