20,000!

Whoever you were, you're a mere 28 miles away from me and you were here all of 0:00. I hope your visit provided you with a feast for the intellect.

You count as number 20,000.

So, you'll be happy to know I'm wrapping up a virtual snow-dome to send to you as your gift.

And, as always, thanks to all of you, especially those who keep visiting and who have linked to this blog. You and your visits and comments have made this fun. For my part, it's (still) most flattering that you find it worthwhile to keep visiting and even link to things you find here. So thank you in particular for that.

Congrats! Too bad the one that tripped your counter over that mile marker did not stay longer than 0:00. There's not too much that anyone can read in that span of time. Maybe it was just a quickie potty stop.

I am trying to figure out what my traffic count is. Tough because I did not start measuring in the beginning. With some fancy interpolation, extrapolation, wet thumbing, deep statistical analysis of existing data, empirical fudge factors, and what ever else it might take, I will arrive at a number one of these days. It will most likely pale in the shadow of your impressive number.

Winston,
I hear you. What makes things especially difficult is that different counters define terms like "visitors" and "hits" and "page views" in different ways; some counters let you display only "hits," some, "visitors;" some counters let you block multiple IPs, some only one (a big deal if, like me, you're known to visit your blog from your computer at work); etc. It's kind of like a nation declaring its exact population or the UN choosing one infant, out of all the infants born on a given day, and declaring him/her to be the 6 billionth person populating the planet. So, yeah--as you note, there's a bit of alchemy involved.

We'll probably have this same conversation again come "Visitor" #30,000. But at some point the number will become so large, like the number of stars in the cosmos, that I can tell y'all anything and you'll swallow it. Of course, that'll be about a hundred years from now . . .

John B.,

Thank you for providing such (usually) compelling reading. I wanna be like you when I grow up.

Congrats, John!

About the 0:00 visit length, I've read that it's tricky to count visit length with blogs, unless successive pages are clicked. I forget where I read that, but it came on good authority. So it's entirely possible that #20,000 lingered on the main page, sipping coffee and smiling, for quite some time.
